Are Girls the Winners When it Comes to Volleyball
Imagine sitting in sixth hour and having the bell ring. Everyone rushes out of the room and you run to your locker to get your things. Then, you race to the gym and pay proudly for your tickets to watch the boys volleyball game. Cool, right? Too bad this is only a fantasy, as of right now.
What do you think? Should we have a boys' volleyball team? Tanner Huizenga, seventh grade student at BMS, said, "Yes, because boys volleyball is a real sport, so some boys already play."
If only it was that simple. Mrs. Moore, athletic director at BMS, said that it's more complicated than we think. Mrs. Moore said that the coach of the team does most of the work to get a new team approved. She also said that some sports she recommends herself and brings to the board, for example, tennis. Other people/coaches normally bring the ideas to her. But it's difficult in the economy right now to add new sports.
Our survey shows that 61% of people would enjoy having a boys volleyball team. But, it's not really up to students or teachers, although they do have a big share in the process it's more up to the Board of Education, Middle School Athletic Director, and High School Athletic Director.
But there's another problem! Some boys say that they wouldn't do it because they want to play other sports or haven't played before. Also, Kim Hirdes, eighth grader, thinks that most boys would not play because they play football.
And some students think it would be a waste of time like Rayleigh Gebben, seventh grader, who says, "It would probably be a waste of time for coaches and players."
But what if we really did have a boys volleyball team? Judd Brown, eighth grader, said he would totally try out just because of the spandex. But not everyone likes the idea of the clothing the boys would wear. Staci Schout, eighth grader, said, "I wouldn't go to the games cause I don't wanna see my guy friends dressed like that."
And maybe it's a good thing that we don't have a boys volleyball team because it might just be a waste of the coach's time, that is, if we could find a coach. According to Mr. Henderson, BMS teacher, he said that he doesn't have the time but would love to coach. Does that apply for all teachers, though?
