Patience really is a virtue
It was bound to happen. As sure as the sun rises in the morning, some fans of the Pictou County Weeks Crushers want heads to roll, after a stretch of games that has seen them lose nine of 11.
And as is often the case in such instances, the coach is the first one they want parked at the guillotine.
"Troy Ryan is our coach, and he will be our head coach," said Weeks president Wade Taylor on Monday. "We've committed to Troy as coach and general manager. We are on a skid right now, and there will be significant (player) changes," between now and the trade deadline.
For starters, replacing a coach midseason is usually like carrying a parasol in a hurricane; it won't make much difference.
Secondly, I know that Ryan puts in a more hours at his job than just about anyone reading this. And his players like him (unless they're the players who aren't getting the ice time they think they deserve, and in those instances, there's usually a reason for that). Furthermore, imagine being responsible for 22 guys who are basically all teenagers, with 22 personalities and 22 sets of parents and problems. They couldn't pay me enough I'd go insane.
Is he a 'goon coach' as fans of other MJAHL teams like to say? Well, he isn't a choirboy in that respect, but I don't think too many fans of the Crusher care about that, judging by their response whenever the gloves drop and the fists fly at John Brother MacDonald Stadium. We've got file photos of fights at JBM, and in many of them you can see the fans in the background, smiling and cheering their approval.
But that's really besides the point; Ryan likes toughness and intimidation because he views it as a necessary part of junior hockey. But it's not like he doesn't know systems and the other nuances of the game; he's built a fairly impressive resume as a coach, and many believe he's gotten more out of his teams in years past than could have been expected.
Fans wanted more this season, which is understandable in a Fred Page Cup year.
A .500 record would indicate that there are a couple of pieces missing to this team, air max pas cher, but there's still time to find answers.
